I know that it was done before Gramps got it because they wouldn't have been able to afford to rebarrel the rifle - things really were pretty tough for them.Īnyway, Gramps still shot shorts in the rifle and kept shooting them for the next 30 or 40 years. But sometime around 1919 (roughly), the barrel was replaced with one that would chamber all three. Now, Gramps's rifle was made in 1906, back when the only round the rifle would chamber was. Gramps shot that rifle a lot - in fact, between it and my great grandfather's Colt Lightning rifle, they were able to eat through some lean times. When my grandfather was a boy, back around 1920, his dad (my great grandfather) bought him a Winchester 1906 rifle.
I ran into Carla over at the Winchester Collector's Forum and she suggested that I bring my sad tale over here, so here I am.
